Children’s Clothes Closet

Our Story

The Children’s Clothes Closet was founded in 1994 at McGaheysville UMC. In 2015 we moved to Cedar Grove UMC on Smithland Road in Harrisonburg and were blessed in 2018 to expand into a 4200 square foot building located on Cedar Grove UMC property. We provide, free of charge, donated clothing (newborn through grade 12), disposable baby diapers and baby supplies to needy families. We currently serve close to 500 families and 1000 children in our community.

Our greatest challenge is maintaining our disposable diaper supply due to the growing need in our community. According to the non-profit organization, National Diaper Bank Network, 5.2 million children in the US, ages 3 and younger, live in poor or low-income families, and the cost of disposable diapers is $70 to $90 per month, per child. Through our mission, we hope to ease the burden of these costs for struggling families in our area.

We are always seeking volunteers to support us in our ministry. Opportunities include sorting, tagging, and hanging clothing; working with clients as they check-in and check-out; and watching children as their parents shop. Fluency in Spanish is a plus! Volunteer work days are held each Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
